Memories
Dance like
Pretty butterflies,
fleeting, Just out of reach –
Tantalizing
Treasured
Photographic memories
Reduced to graffiti
Etched by impetuous light –
Meaningless
Reality
Now fragmented;
Well-defined lines
Between fact and fiction
Blurred
Soul
Lost in
The labyrinth of
Tangled impressions, intangible expressions –
Chaotic
Wandering
Down the memory lane
Encroached by dementia
Bold steps
Falter
Time
Spares none:
A black hole
Vacuum-pulling all into
Oblivion

_________________________________________
Zainab says: “This poem was written during a local poetry writing competition and was partly inspired by my grandfather. Thank you for introducing me to the inversion of the form – it really helped out in the penultimate stanza!”
What Zainab didn’t mention is that this poem came a well deserved second in the competition. The poem truly demonstrates how the Elfje form can be used to create more complex poems. The inverted form really works well here.

some
anniversaries are
reminders of sadness
it’s been twelve years –
loss
time
marches on
and just when
breath returns so do
tears
contemplation
edging reality
at the creek
banking on good memory
flow
I
stand alone
let water fall
from my blinking eyes…
see?
